If it’s Sunday, there
is reggae being played in the house. This music beats in rhythm with the heart and
is perfect for a Sunday morning. Obviously, reggae is great every day, but on
Sunday mornings from 9:00 am to noon, I listen to Jeff Sarge’s Reggae Schoolroom
on WFMU 91.1, Jersey City NJ. I get WFMU through my Alexa and Jeff Sarge plays lots
of reggae I’ve never heard before and far beyond the usual Bob Marley songs
that are so popular. I’ve been listening to his program since the 80s and
Reggae Schoolroom makes for a great Sunday morning, even if I still can’t
understand what Sarge says between songs.
Bob Marley died in 1981
at 36, but his legacy has left us with an incredible collection of infectious
music. February 6 is his birthday and recently we attended a celebration of the
late singer held at the Ardmore Music Hall. This was the 10th
anniversary of this event and we got to dance to several reggae bands before
the headliner, Luciano. Luciano is one of the most popular of current reggae stars
today and the Ardmore Music Hall bulged with patrons.
I had the great fortune
20 years ago to attend another Luciano concert at the Brooklyn Academy of Music
(BAM), and it was great to see him again.
A few years ago, we got
to attend a free concert given by the Wailers, Marley’s group, minus of course
Peter Tosh. Sadly, Bunny Wailer died a few months after the show.
Yeah, we like reggae,
and we like free things.
We go to Sandals a lot.
The all-inclusive, adult couples only family of resorts started in Jamaica, and
they recently sent Janet an offer to get a free ticket to see the new biopic
Bob Marley: One Love. The movie focuses on the mid-70s and the turmoil in
Jamaica at the time and the creation of his album, Exodus. It reached Gold in
the U.S. and Platinum in the UK.
Anyway, Janet jumped on
the free offer like a bum after a ham sandwich.
Back to the music.
